Founded in 1986, Simchat Yisrael is a diverse and welcoming congregation serving greater New Haven, Connecticut and beyond. We embody a joyful commitment to Jewish life renewed in Yeshua.

It is with great sadness that we share the news that our beloved Rabbi, Anthony “Tony” Eaton, passed peacefully in his home on the evening of Tuesday, May 5, 2026.

Rabbi Tony leaves behind a legacy of loving service and sacrifice, leading our congregation, Simchat Yisrael, for 30 years, from 1991 to 2021.

He took great joy in the life of the Simchat community and in creating a congregational home for Jewish believers in Messiah Yeshua. He will be forever remembered for his warm presence, compassionate heart, and steadfast faith; for officiating weddings, welcoming new babies, mentoring children for their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, visiting the sick, comforting grieving families, and walking alongside countless individuals through every season of life. For so many, Rabbi Tony was not only a spiritual leader, but also a trusted mentor, counselor, and dear friend whose wisdom and encouragement changed the course of their lives.

Rabbi Tony had a deep love for music and worship, which was woven into every part of his ministry. Through song, prayer, and celebration, he helped create a vibrant and joyful spiritual home where people encountered God, community, and belonging. His love of learning was equally profound. He approached the study of Scripture, Jewish tradition, and theology with humility, curiosity, and passion, inspiring generations to deepen both their knowledge and their faith. He delighted in thoughtful conversation and in helping others discover the richness of Jewish life and discipleship.

He was known for building community and cultivating relationships with many faith leaders throughout the greater New Haven area and across Connecticut. Rabbi Tony carried himself with kindness, integrity, and generosity of spirit, earning the respect and affection of people from many different backgrounds and traditions.

Rabbi Tony also faithfully served in various roles in the Union of Messianic Jewish Congregations for many decades, including on the UMJC Executive Committee as Treasurer and as UMJC Northeast Regional Director. He was especially passionate about raising up future generations of leaders and spearheaded many efforts, both formally and informally, to mentor and nurture a new generation of Jewish believers committed to their faith and community. His investment in others leaves an enduring legacy that will continue for generations to come.

Rabbi Tony was also a founding member and active leader of the Messianic Jewish Rabbinical Council. He was deeply passionate about living an authentically Jewish life, responsive to Torah and tradition and faithful to Messiah Yeshua. Through his teaching, leadership, and personal example, he encouraged others to embrace both devotion to God and deep love for the Jewish people and community.

Above all, Rabbi Tony was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, and family man. His love for his family was evident in everything he did, and the care, affection, and faithfulness he showed them reflected the same compassion and dedication he extended to his congregation and community.

We mourn the loss of a beloved Rabbi, teacher, mentor, and friend, while giving thanks for a life so beautifully and faithfully lived. Rabbi Tony’s impact on our congregation, the wider Messianic Jewish movement, and the countless lives he touched can never be fully measured. His memory will forever remain a blessing to all who knew and loved him.

May his memory be for a blessing.
